Nigeria faces yearly flooding disasters. Are we truly prepared? Examining causes, consequences, and strategies for prevention and resilience.
Every rainy season, Nigerians brace for floods. From Lagos to Benue, entire communities are submerged, thousands displaced, and billions lost. Yet year after year, the cycle repeats. Are we truly prepared?
Causes
1. Poor drainage and unplanned urbanization.
2. Climate change intensifying rainfall.
3. Weak enforcement of environmental laws.
4. Release of waters from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam without adequate warning.
The Human Cost
Floods wipe out farms, homes, and schools. Children lose entire academic years. Families live in IDP camps without hope.
Solutions
- Build resilient drainage and embankments.
- Strengthen forecasting systems.
- Engage communities in risk mapping.
- Enforce planning laws ruthlessly.
Final Reflection
Floods are not just natural disasters; they are governance failures. Nigeria must move from reaction to prevention, or the annual tragedies will persist.
