Why Do Nigerians Still Patronize Quacks Instead of Hospitals?

Even with hospitals and pharmacies, many still use quacks/roadside chemists. Why does this persist?

Nigerians continue to visit quacks for health issues because hospitals are often associated with long waiting times, expensive bills, and limited trust in doctors. The average person prefers a quick solution and believes the chemist or traditional healer in their area can provide immediate help. Sadly, this has caused misdiagnosis, drug abuse, and deaths that could have been avoided. There is also a strong cultural element; elders often recommend herbal mixtures first before seeking modern healthcare. To reduce reliance on quacks, hospitals must become more patient-friendly, affordable, and efficient. Governments should also regulate chemists more strictly and increase health education in communities. Without deliberate efforts, quacks will continue to thrive because they provide “quick relief,” even if it is harmful.
