I have heard a lot of people bring this matter up. Emotions apart, I think Prof. Osinbajo may not be all that people think or assume he is. Fine, he appeals to a religious segment of the Nigerian society and he is also a bona fide Yoruba son. Many have been clamoring that the power rotation should come to the South West which of course, makes Osinbajo more than qualified to contest the election. He has all the qualifications and he’s been in the corridor of power as President Muhammadu’s deputy for the past seven years. However, I still don’t believe Osinbajo is the best candidate to lead Nigeria.
Nigerians tend to ride on the wave of sentiments when it comes to electing whoever would occupy Aso Rock every election cycle. This of course is the highest office in the land and this I believe is the reason for all the sentiments being expressed.
I remember how sentimental some segment of the Nigerian populace was when President Buhari came up with the change mantra in 2015. Many didn’t take the time to critically examine the antecedents of the man. The social media generation played an active role in brainwashing many Nigerians online, making Buhari appear like a saint who just descended from heaven to resolve Nigeria’s many problems. Fast forward to where the nation is today, there is little (maybe a few here and there) or nothing anyone could point to as the achievement of this current administration.
Food prices are on the rise, and the exchange rate; especially the Nigerian naira to dollars is at its worst today. The corruption that many Nigerians thought the Buhari administration would tackle head-on is still part of this administration. Just some days ago, the accountant general of the federation was accused of mismanaging the sum of N80billion naira. That’s enough money to settle the issue of ASUU and fix many deplorable Nigerian Federal roads. Insecurity is still on the high side, the justice system hasn’t seen so much improvement and to make the matters uninteresting, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, a professor of law, a legal juggernaut of many years; is part of this administration.
How can the same Osinbajo be trusted to then lead Nigeria in 2023? I want you to join this conversation by sharing your thought on the FORUM. If you think Osinbajo is the man, bring forth your strong reasons and if you think otherwise, let us know as well. This matter is about Nigeria and our future and your contribution would sure go a long way in bringing about the needed sanity into Nigeria’s political space.
