Fintech has grown, yet cash still dominates. Why do many Nigerians hesitate to pay online?

Nigerians fear online payments mainly because of fraud stories and poor experiences. Failed transactions where money disappears, phishing scams, and unhelpful bank responses have created deep distrust. Even when fintechs like Paystack and Flutterwave guarantee refunds, many Nigerians still prefer cash or transfer at the point of delivery. Another issue is network instability. If a transaction hangs midway, anxiety kicks in. To fix this, fintech companies and banks must continue building trust with faster refunds, stronger security, and aggressive user education. Over time, as more Nigerians see that online payments are safe, adoption will grow. The reality is that cashless systems are the future, but trust must be rebuilt one successful transaction at a time.
