Many of us in Maiduguri, and indeed across Nigeria, have grown accustomed to equating spiritual maturity with how often we appear in church or religious events. Sometimes, it’s about how loud we sing in the choir, how many programmes we attend, or how visibly active we are in church committees. But I want us to pause and think seriously—what does real spiritual maturity truly look like? Is it just about presence and activity, or is there something deeper that impacts the way we live every single day?

Faith That Transforms Our Daily Lives

Faith is supposed to be more than a Sunday show. It must anchor our attitudes, decisions, and actions even when no one is watching. Consider the trader in Maiduguri who prays fervently every morning but cheats customers to make more profit. Or the student who memorizes scripture but fails to respect their teachers and classmates. Spiritual maturity means our faith produces visible fruit: honesty, kindness, patience, and integrity in all circumstances.

Discipline Over Convenience

Many Nigerians struggle not because they don’t want to live right but because discipline is challenging. Spiritual maturity demands self-control—not just fasting or praying on special days, but consistency in daily habits. Do we pray when life is calm or only during storms? Do we read and meditate on the Word when we are tired from work or school? Discipline in spiritual life builds resilience, making us stable when crises hit Maiduguri or the nation at large.

Prayer: More Than Requests

Prayer is a powerful tool, but many reduce it to a wish list. Genuine spiritual maturity reframes prayer as a conversation and a way to align our will with God’s. It involves listening and reflecting, not just speaking. For example, the entrepreneur struggling with decisions at their shop might spend more time understanding God’s direction than just petitioning for success. This depth leads to wisdom that guides practical choices.

Wisdom and Values in Action

True spirituality shines where policies and priorities touch life’s realities. It means embracing values like humility when we succeed and gratitude when we face setbacks. A mature Christian in Maiduguri doesn’t just preach love but shows it by helping neighbours from different backgrounds and standing against injustice, not just in church sermons but in everyday life.

Spiritual Consistency: The Real Challenge

Consistency is the hallmark of maturity. It’s easy to look good for a programme or festival, but what about the other 364 days? A mature spiritual person is someone whose faith is not seasonal but year-round. For families, this means maintaining peace and mutual respect even when stress is high. For workers, it means refusing corruption even when the system gives every temptation to take shortcuts. For students, it means honesty in exams and respect for knowledge.

Practical Spirituality We Can Live With

  • Start the day early: Spend 10 minutes in quiet meditation or prayer before the day’s rush.
  • Speak life: Choose words that build others, avoiding gossip and negative talk.
  • Act with integrity: Keep promises, pay debts on time, and take responsibility for mistakes.
  • Serve without expectation: Help neighbours or colleagues without always waiting for recognition.
  • Learn to forgive: Harbouring grudges stalls spiritual growth; forgiving frees the soul.

Our city, Maiduguri, faces tough challenges—from insecurity to economic hardship. But spiritual maturity can be part of the solution. When individuals grow deeper in faith, discipline, and wisdom, communities become stronger. This is the kind of spirituality that changes nations, not just programs or church attendance registers.

Let’s challenge ourselves—beyond counting services and events—to live faith that transforms us and those around us. If we do, we’ll experience a peace and strength that no circumstance can shake.

Questions for Reflection and Discussion

  1. How does your faith influence your daily decisions and interactions, beyond church walls?
  2. What practical steps can you take this week to show spiritual maturity in your home, workplace, or school?
  3. In what ways can our community encourage more consistent and authentic spirituality rather than just attendance?
